140th Annual Exhibition


The Royal Ulster Academy of Arts (RUA) was founded in 1879 and has survived many changes of premises, several wars and most recently a global pandemic. It is currently the largest and longest established body of practicing visual artists in Northern Ireland.

The Call for Entries to the 140th Annual Exhibition opens on Tuesday 1st June 2021 and the deadline for submissions is 4pm on Friday 30 July.

Submissions are welcomed from artists working in paint, drawing, print, sculpture, photography, digital, glass and ceramics.

The 2021 Adjudicator is Dr Éimear O'Connor HRHA, BA, MBA, PhD, Director of the Tyrone Guthrie Centre.

Exhibition Entry Information

General Information
The 140th Royal Ulster Academy of Arts (RUA) Annual exhibition is due be held at the Ulster Museum, Botanic Gardens, Belfast from 29 October 2021 to 2 January 2022 depending on Coronavirus restrictions. 

Submissions of work are invited from visual artists working in any medium. Anyone over the age of 18 may submit work.  There is no maximum age limit.  

NB: No member of the Selection Committee or Staff member may enter work for open selection to the Annual Exhibition.


  • A maximum of three artworks in any medium may be submitted per artist.
  • No more than one artwork will be accepted from any one artist.
  • Prints of artwork that exist in another format (i.e. painting, sculpture, drawing, etc) are considered reproductions and are therefore inadmissible.
  • Work entered to the exhibition must have been created between 2019 and 2021. 
  • Work previously exhibited in Northern Ireland will not be accepted. 
  • The RUA reserves the right to reject work that they believe to be a breach of copyright.
  • If any artwork is constructed of material that may degrade or contains reactants that would interact with the display environment, the Ulster Museum may be unable to display such a work. In this case, should such a work be selected, the artist's entry fee will be refunded.
  • All work is expected to be for sale with the exception of portraits.  There is a minimum price of £350 and £150 for framed etchings, one-off prints, editioned photographs, lithography or drawings.
  • The maximum size of artwork in its largest dimension including framing is 200 cm. The overall size of diptychs, triptychs, etc. must adhere to this maximum size limit.  All entries must be less that two metres in any one direction including frame.  
  • There is no minimum size limit.
  • All hanging fixings and attachments must be removed before delivery of selected artwork.

Image Uploads
Image files should be JPG or PNG and no more than 5MB large. Upload time will depend on your internet connection speed so please be patient. If you are having problems uploading your images please use image editing software to resize your image to approximately 1600 pixels wide and then save as a new file. Image file names should not be too long and should not contain any invalid characters such as ' " & % * ( ) < > / \ ~ # + =

Work selected for exhibition will be expected to be for sale (except in the case of portraits).

The sale price must include:

  1. the RUA commission of 30%
  2. any VAT applicable
  3. any Tax applicable
  4. the cost of any frame.

All communication will be by email and through logging into your OESS Artist account for updates on the Selection process. While the RUA endeavours to ensure that the website is available 24 hours a day, we will not be liable if, for any reason, the site is unavailable at any time, including the last 24 hours before the exhibition deadline.

The Selection Committee will select the works for the exhibition. The Selectors will consider all correctly completed submissions. The decision of the Selectors on all matters is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Artists are responsible for insuring their own work. All works accepted for exhibition will be displayed entirely at the artists' risk and organisers and the gallery will not accept liability for loss or damage occurring during the exhibition.

Delivery and Collection

To be arranged as Coronavirus restrictions allow.

In the event of any sale, delivery of work to the buyer/purchaser will be the responsibility of the artist.

Artists from outside Northern Ireland should be aware that if delivery and collection of the work is required then: The artist is responsible for costs and all arrangements around postage, packaging and Import Duty.

By submitting to the exhibition you are deemed to accept and agree to the following:

  • The decision of the Selectors on all matters Is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • The Organisers (RUA & Ulster Museum) reserve the right to make such changes to the exhibition arrangements and these Terms & Conditions as may be deemed necessary by circumstances.
  • The Organisers are authorised to process, store, and utilise the data in my submission and agree that, if selected for exhibition, images of my work can be freely used by The Organisers, The Gallery and associated organisations for promotional and publicity purposes.
  • All information provided by me is true and accurate and that the work submitted is wholly of my own creation.
  • I have read and understood these terms and conditions and by submitting this application I accept and agree to observe all the Terms And Conditions therein.
